Juventus became the first team to achieve a cup double in consecutive seasons after managing the AC Milan in extra time.
Last season, manager Massimiliano Allegri guided the club to Italian Serie A and Coppa Italia success. The club successfully defended the league title in stunning fashion after winning the title with a nine point margin over second placed Napoli. There were concerns after 90 minutes against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia final. The game was still poised 0-0 with both teams struggling to break each other. However, an extra time winner ensured that Juventus retained the Coppa Italia.
Substitute Álvaro Morata, who has had a habit of scoring some important goals for the club, secured the winner in the 110th minute. It helped beat a resolute Milan team, who were later praised by Allegri for their valiant effort. Milan were giving their 110% since it was a great opportunity to finish the season on a positive note after having missed out on European qualification. Milan finished the season seventh in the Italian Serie A with only the top five teams being able to qualifying for the European competitions. For Juventus, it means yet another successful domestic campaign although the team will be focusing more on Europe next season.
"First of all I want to thank my players. Winning tonight [Saturday] was not easy and so the club and fans also deserve some of the kudos. I also have to congratulate Milan, especially for how they played in the first half.In the second period we got on the ball a bit more and took more risks. But finals are like that, you have to not only be good but lucky as well. I had to decide whether to win the match right there and then or wait for the penalties,” said Allegri.
